Merritt Family Scholarship Presents $10,000 to Local Club Youth

ELIZABETHTON — A meaningful investment in the future of local youth continues to take root through the Merritt Family Scholarship, a one-of-a-kind opportunity supporting higher education and skilled trade pathways for deserving students connected to the Boys & Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County.

Established in 2023 by community leaders Randy and Brenda Merritt, the scholarship is the only program of its kind among Tri-Cities Boys & Girls Clubs. It was created with a clear purpose: to ensure that young people who have grown through the Club experience have the support needed to pursue meaningful careers and further their education after graduation.

The scholarship is open to graduating seniors from Carter County and Elizabethton schools who remain active in the Club through at least their sophomore year, recognizing sustained commitment and personal development. Applicants undergo a thorough selection process, which includes a formal application, a written essay, and an in-person interview with the scholarship committee.

This year’s recipient, Cooper Adkins, exemplifies the values the scholarship was designed to honor. A senior and honor student at Elizabethton High School, Cooper plans to attend East Tennessee State University Honors College this fall, where he intends to major in finance or a related field. Cooper stated, “…the $10,000 will afford me to live on campus which was not an option before this!”

Cooper’s journey with the Club began at just five years old. Over the years, he balanced academics, EHS football, and employment while maintaining a strong connection to the Club. Even with a full schedule and other extracurricular activities, he made time to give back, volunteering to help younger members with homework and daily programming.

“I remember Cooper as a young Club kid who was rambunctious! He has grown into a fine young man who represents exactly what this scholarship stands for,” Shelly Parham, CEO shared. “He has grown up in the Club, taken advantage of opportunities, and turned around to invest in others. That kind of leadership and character is what builds strong communities.”

Cooper and his family were recognized during a recent check presentation ceremony, joined by the Merritt family, whose foundation funds the scholarship. In addition to the Merritts’ leadership, the scholarship has been strengthened by the generosity of many friends and supporters who have contributed financially to grow the fund and expand its reach.

For Randy Merritt, the scholarship holds personal significance. Randy grew up in Elizabethton, and he previously served on the Boys & Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County Board of Directors and continues to remain actively involved alongside Brenda in Club programs and initiatives. Their shared commitment reflects a deep belief in providing young people with the tools and encouragement they need to succeed.

By supporting both college-bound students and those pursuing trade careers, the Merritt Family Scholarship honors the value of hard work in all forms, reinforcing a longstanding tradition of investing in the next generation. Gavin Freeman and Braylon Brown were also recognized as Juniors applying for the scholarship and each received $1,200 and will be eligible to apply next year as well.

As another student steps forward with the support of this scholarship, the Merritt family’s vision, now shared by many, continues to shape brighter futures, strengthening a community grounded in opportunity, service, and hope.
